1. Installation Considerations
The aF4 shelf is specifically designed to securely hold the aF4 when installed in 1/2" or thicker plywood.
While completely capable of being installed elsewhere, all mounting considerations and planning falls on the customer when not installing into 1/2" or thicker plywood.
Note: The aF4 when filled with slurry will weigh approximately 6 lbs!
2. Required Tools
Gather the following tools before attempting to install your aF4 shelf:
- Pencil for marking.
- Level
- T20 Torx Bit
- Drill
- 9/64 Drill Bit
3. Mark Holes
Using the shelf as a template, place it against the surface you would like to install.
Place a level on the shelf or on the top edge of the shelf and make sure the shelf is level before marking the positions of the holes.
Tip: If your intended install location is an awkward to reach spot, you can make a template using paper. Place the paper behind the shelf, line up the top edge with the top of the shelf, and mark the four holes. Poke holes at the four marks and use the paper as the template. A level should still be used on the top edge of the paper to ensure level mounting.
4. Drill Pilot Holes
Using a 9/64" drill bit, carefully drill pilot holes for the screws in each of the four marked locations.
Tip: Mark the drill bit with a sharpie at a depth that will NOT punch through the thickness of the wood being used.
5. Mount the shelf
Locate the 4 screws included with the shelf, and install them 75% of the way using the T20 Torx bit and the drill on a low setting or with a hand tool if you want to be extra careful. Overtightening can crack the shelf!
Once all 4 screws are installed about 75% of the way, fully tighten the Top right corner, then the bottom left corner, then the top left corner and finally the bottom right corner.
6. Test the shelf!
Lightly press down on the shelf, it should feel solid. Try lifting the shelf up gently. There should be no movement at all.
If your shelf is secure, install the aF4 - fan side facing out, drain drawer is accessible on the cutout on the bottom of the shelf.
Tip: If you'd like to be extra sure, test the shelf with a 6-10lb weight (we use a 15lb weight to test, so 6-10lbs is safe!) overnight. After the test, there should be no movement in the shelf.
